For the first time in nearly 25 years, The Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute welcomed a female Asian elephant calf on Monday. Asian elephants are an endangered species. Shortly after the calf’s birth, keepers conducted a comprehensive exam, which required the calf to stand and walk to a scale.
